“Each one should give what he has decided in his heart he should give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” ~ II Corinthians 9:7
The Bible tells us how God wants us to offer our money to Him. Whatever we give to the Lord is to be given cheerfully. In II Corinthians 9:7, the English word, cheerful, comes from the Greek word hilarion. This is also where we get our English word, hilarious. In other words, God loves it when we give to Him hilariously.
In reality, we are no different. Imagine it is your birthday and someone gives you a gift saying, “Here is your rotten, lousy birthday present. It cost too much and I wish I could have spent the money on something for myself instead. Happy Birthday.” How would you feel? You would probably feel horrible and say, “I think you should keep the present.” However, it is quite different when someone gives you a gift and says, “I can’t wait to see you open this. I had such fun looking for it and buying it for you. Happy Birthday!” That’s a present you would enjoy receiving.
When we give our money to God, the Lord wants our attitude to be cheerful and full of joy. “Here’s my offering to you, Lord. I can’t wait to see what you do with it!”
God wants you to enjoy giving. After all, this is how the Lord feels about giving to us.
